COLUMBUS (AP) - Ohio's five public retirement systems spent more than $1 million on travel to conferences during a one-year period while the economy continued to squeeze the funds' pension investments, according to records reviewed by a newspaper.

When two board members of the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund jetted to New York in October for a conference on protecting investments, the pension fund made an investment of its own: more than $400 per night for each trustee to stay in a hotel that "blends old-world elegance and new-world opulence."
